baltic sketching festival 2019-105.jpg

This will be our 5th Urbansketching School in Riga and this time our theme is

Stepping out of comfort zone!

We all have some drawing crisis from time to time. We want to draw better, maybe change our style or develop it further. We also might want to let off control freak we all have inside us. And for this we have to try new things, have new angle and new perspective. We have to step out of ordinary way of doing, of drawing, sketching. This is challenging and rewarding in long-run. We have crafted three days of workshops, lectures, sketch walks around this theme. We want to use this autumn "cocooning" mood not to sleep whole winter but to be able to become a beautiful new butterfly even before the next spring. Alongside of this we know that it will be a heartwarming weekend for all sketching friends full of pure joy of rich colours, lines and sketches!

  • 3h workshop by Charline Moreau, France/Italy

Looking at Riga on a map, the first thing I noticed was the green areas : trees everywhere ! What a surprise, because when I first searched for « Riga » picture on the internet, I just found architecture images, some of the river, but not many of parks a vegetation. Then, I started to focus on these parks and found beautiful old trees, acting like a frame around incredible buildings.

So, I thought to create the Riga’s workshop about Trees & architecture : the perfect match. I think, in this current times, it’s important to pay attention on the chance we have to live in wooded cities. I’ve seen that Riga has different parks and gardens built around the old city.

In this workshop, we’ll see how to compose with trees and architecture, and how they will complete each other, higlighting both subjects.

  • 3h workshop by Alise Kinasta, Latvia

We will explore and learn the joy of unconventional watercolor techniques by .. by just going wild with splashing, splattering, blooming and layering the colors to purposely make mistakes. Which is impossible in art. We will use unusual tools and brushes to challenge ourselves, to unlearn what we know about watercolors and to set us free in our each and individual style of expression. There will be mess, the unexpected and above all - the freedom. In the end of the workshop you will have at least 10 abstract pieces to be used as you wish.

  • there will be lunch break between workshops

Sunday - January 20, 2019

  • 11.00 - 14.00 - Sketch-walk-brunch

I’m Charline Moreau, born in Nantes, in the north-west of France. I studied spatial design and landscape architecture, maybe inspired by the garden full of flowers and vegetables cultivated with love by my parents. I work as a freelance illustrator in landscape architecture and I teach sketching and watercolor workshops. I discovered urban sketching while I was studying abroad, in Genoa and filled my first travel sketchbook in Italy in 2016, even if I draw from as long as I can remember. I love drawing architecture but can't resist composing with trees and plants. Correspondent for Urban Sketchers France blog, I’m part of the Usk Nantes coordinators, and I join Usk Liguria-Italy each month since I moved in Genoa. I love to see how sketching enables people to communicate without words.

I am Agnese Aljena, sketcher, illustrator and photographer, based in Riga, Latvia. During my PhD studies I researched a theme of value management in fine art, and for several years my personal interest outside the scope of thesis was creativity and psychological processes behind it. Drawing was a kind of personal experiment for me, brought to urban sketching and now I am waiting for my first illustrated book to be printed. Drawing has become a significant part of my life and I feel like I have found a way back to my roots.
